The Red Slayers were an elite force of soldiers in the army of Valusia. Like the Black Squadron, they served primarily as mounted cavalry, but they also served as royal palace guards and personal bodyguards to the king. Whenever Kull traveled abroad, he always brought along with him a detachment of Slayers. Their name refers to the red color of their clothing.[1][2][3][4][5]

Many of the soldiers who served in the Red Slayers were hillmen from the Zalgara Mountains, valued for their strength and endurance. The commander of the Red Slayers was Kelkor (or Kelka in some stories), a Lemurian and former mercenary in the Valusian army.[2]

Kull himself was a soldier in the Red Slayers before he took the crown of Valusia. As king it was often his habit before retiring for the night to chat with his former comrades among the Slayers about the old days.[4]

They are also known as the Red Guard.[3]
