In the Conan story "The Scarlet Citadel", the term oliphant refers to a war horn sounded in battle, though it is sometimes misinterpreted by readers as "elephant" in the context of the story. Historical oliphants (or olifants) for battle or hunting were typically made from elephant tusks, hence the term. The oliphant of General Arbanus in "Citadel" was made of gold ("the general commended his soul to Ishtar and sounded the golden oliphant"). Compare with the olifant carried by the legendary Frankish knight Roland in the French epic poem The Song of Roland.[1]
