"Hyborian Names" is an article authored by L. Sprague de Camp, expanding upon his articles, "An Exegesis of Howard's Hyborian Tales" published in Amra, II, 4–6, "Addenda to the Exegesis" in Amra, II, 6; "Exegetical Addenda" in Amra, II, 9, "Addenda to the Exegesis" in Amra, II, 40; "Superaddendum to the Exegesis" in Amra, II, 45; "An Exegesis of Howard's Hyborian Tales" in The Conan Reader; and "An Exegesis of Names Discarded by REH" in Amra, II, 51. It first appeared published in Conan the Swordsman.[1]
The primary source of the names contained therein is purportedly a list originally prepared by Glenn Lord for L. Sprague de Camp from a number of drafts discarded by Robert E. Howard. However, many of the published names by L. Sprague de Camp are at odds with those published by the material collected by Wandering Star. Combined with the numerous spelling errors, as well as names entirely absent from the collected Wandering Star volumes, and Robert E. Howard drafts contained therein, the veracity of L. Sprague de Camp's "Hyborian Names" has been called into question. "Hyborian Names", as published in Conan the Swordsman, actually attributes "Karnath" to the first draft of the heavily-edited Gnome Press Conan the Conqueror, rather than Robert E. Howard's unaltered manuscript of The Hour of the Dragon.[1]
Robert E. Howard did, however, author "Hyborian Names and Countries," as collected by Wandering Star.[2]
